Protecting Loved Ones 1: Beneficiaries

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: time to focus on the people who matter

As the nights draw in, the lights come on and we head into the wintery months, it’s a time when many of us think about peace, goodwill and gift giving. And we naturally focus on the people who matter to us most.

This year, give yourself the gift of peace of mind. Go into a fresh new year knowing you’ve helped to protect your loved ones by making your wishes about your pension benefits clear. It’s as simple as filling in a form.

Make your wishes clear.

Do you want a say in who gets your pension benefits if you die before you take them? If yes, naming people, organisations or charities on an expression of wish form can help make this happen.

Why does this form matter?

Did you know your pension plan’s provider or trustee is legally responsible for deciding where to pay your benefits? It means they need evidence for who should get your benefits – and your expression of wish form can be part of this evidence. It also means there should be no inheritance tax on the benefits, because they aren’t part of your estate.

It’s easy to do.

Simply ask your pension provider or trustee for an expression of wish form (it may also be called a ‘nomination’ or ‘nomination of beneficiaries’ form). Fill it in and send it back. Done!

And even if you think you’ve done it before, it’s worth doing again so your wishes are as up to date as possible. Life changes, after all.

Let’s look after each other.
